MARTINSBURG — For the last several months, business partners Ann Raresheid and Tara Runkles have been working with Giant Foods Inc. to put Bar-B-Que Beast sauces on the shelves of local Martin’s Food Stores.

Bar-B-Que Beast LLC is a local, all-female, veteran company owned by Raresheid and Runkles. The business partners have been working on a deal with Giant Foods Inc. for the last several months after the company reached out to them. The sauce will be on many local shelves in Martin’s Grocery Stores at the end of March in the Berkeley county area, as well as Winchester and Hagerstown.

“In April, our Beast Sauce will be in two Martin’s locations in Martinsburg and in Hedgesville, once Martin’s opens up that location,” Runkles said. “It will be in three locations in Winchester, three locations in Hagerstown and the Martin’s in Charles Town.”

The two said that when Giant Foods Inc. expressed interest, they thought it could be a scam. Nevertheless, the two presented Bar-B-Que Beast sauce to the company, gaining a contract with the shelves in local Martin’s stores starting at the end of March.

“Winning the awards is mind blowing. But when the people say they like it, when they take it home and cook with it in their own kitchens, when they are giving it to their families – that is to me, better than anything,” Raresheid said. “Martin’s is giving everybody the chance to have it.”

Bar-B-Que Beast Sauce was created approximately 30 years ago on a military base in Stuttgart, Germany, according to the owners. Last year, the sauce was recognized in national barbeque sauce judging competitions.

“As a member of the U.S. Air Force stationed abroad, I missed a traditional BBQ sauce,” Raresheid said. “I decided to make my own. And so, it began, one attempt after another, trying to perfect a sauce I remembered from the States.”

When telling of the company’s origins, Raresheid recalled her experience with now co-owner, Runkles.

“When Tara tasted the sauce for the first time, she demanded to know where I bought it,” Raresheid said. “When I told her it was homemade from my own recipe, she told me we have to share this sauce with everyone.”

In the local area, Crestview Meat Market in Martinsburg and Taylor’s Farm Market in Inwood both carry the BBQ Beast Sauces. Canada, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nevada and Maryland also have locations that sell the brand.

According to its website, the small business believes in a sense of community, using its barbeque sauce to bring people together. Runkles and Raresheid both said they cook with the sauces in many ways in their own kitchens and hope people will do the same.

The sauces currently have five different sauce flavors: Carolina Beast, Curry Beast, Hot Beast, Spicy Beast and Original Beast — which have all been recognized nationally.

The sauces have also won professional and people’s choice awards in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Illinois.

Through the company’s growth throughout the years, the two co-owners explained that they have also faced some hardship.

Raresheid added that Bar-B-Que Beast LLC is viewed differently since they are two women who created a barbeque sauce company, entering a male dominant field.
