Here‘s what happened in the Additive Manufacturing industry last week. Read about 3D printing from metal to plastic, from industry to small businesses, from production to bleeding-edge innovations. As we move through the month of February, the 3D printing industry has already gotten off to an impressive start. This past week, additive manufacturing has continued on its momentous path, leading to yet another fresh slate of news stories, announcements, and technological innovations. In this week’s 3D printing digest: Markforged receives an investment from a U.S. intelligence-backed VC, GE Research gains access to the world’s top supercomputer, Formlabs partners with the dental materials company BEGO, and more! Renowned for its metal and composite 3D printing technology, the Massachusetts-based additive manufacturing startup Markforged has had little trouble getting investors and manufacturers lined up at the door. Past financing rounds have included the likes of Microsoft Ventures and Porsche SE. But this past week, Markforged received its most interesting and top-secret investment yet, pulling in a strategic investment from In-Q-Tel, Inc., a non-profit investor that identifies an...

Shawn Johnson East ‘Shamed’ for Formula Feeding Daughter | PEOPLE.com

For more from Andrew and Shawn Johnson East, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday Shawn Johnson East and her 3-month-old daughter Drew Hazel have gotten a rhythm down when it comes to feedings, but it wasn’t an easy journey. The Olympic gold medalist, 28, opens up to PEOPLE for this week’s issue about the process she and husband Andrew East went through that led them to supplement with formula for their baby girl, after she initially breastfed for the week they were in the hospital following Johnson East’s cesarean section. “It was a wrestling match every time,” says Johnson East, who was recently named the first-ever spokesperson for Enfamil. “I would be bawling, she would be bawling and screaming ’cause she was hungry, but she wouldn’t eat and she wouldn’t latch anymore.” The new parents even called in reinforcements in the form of a lactation consultant — a decision that didn’t exactly go the way Johnson East and her former NFL player husband, 28, had hoped. “I had a really bad experience with a lactation consultant and I all but kicked her out of my house because she basically said that I had ruined my child’s life because I gave her a bottle and formula...

REVIEW – Electricity is an essential commodity for us Gadgeteers.  Everything takes power, and there simply are not enough places to plug in our gadgets. Power strips are nice, but with so many gadgets coming with wall-wart style plugs, it’s hard to use a power strip fully.  Add to that a large number of USB-powered gadgets, each requiring its own USB power puck, and *boom*, your power strip is over-full. iClever has a solution for both the space and power outlet challenged among us. The iClever Bootstrap series power tower is a surge-protected power center offering eight 110V outlets and four USB outlets. Setup involves plugging in the unit and then plugging in your stuff.  Here it is, situated behind my monitor. Performance is hard to determine, especially when it comes to surge protection.  With 900 Joules of surge protection, it should do a good job protecting my gadgets.  Performance, otherwise, is much easier to determine. This replaced an older power strip that dominated this space as it was huge.  The iClever takes up so much less space, given its vertical design, that it opens up that space. This makes it much easier to get to the outlets.  The 2.5-inch spacing between ...

The aerospace and defense (A&D) industry is experiencing tremendous growth; however, that growth can frequently be

The aerospace and defense (A&D) industry is experiencing tremendous growth; however, that growth can frequently be inhibited by outdated processes, aging technology, and fragmented value chains. Integrated digital value chains will enable A&D companies to streamline and connect key processes across their design, manufacturing, and service domains. Increased collaboration between business leaders, information technology (IT), and other technology partners is critical in today’s business climate, where success cannot be achieved without accelerating digital transformation. Three major components of digital transformation in A&D, highlighted with a few recent examples, show how these strategies and tools are being deployed. Within design, manufacture, and service (DMS), a digital value chain improves product availability and profitability and digitizes business processes for improved collaboration and knowledge sharing. Digital value chains promote learning, improve knowledge sharing capabilities, and better-support decision-making. Creating an isolated digital value chain brings immediate results while laying the groundwork for long-term growth. For example, more than...

Amazon warns sellers on listings that make false coronavirus claims

Amazon is removing listings from its online marketplace that claim to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The company notified third-party merchants this week that it was taking down listings claiming to be a treatment, cure or remedy for the coronavirus, according to an email obtained by CNBC. It comes as the coronavirus outbreak has continued to worsen. The coronavirus has spread to more than two dozen countries, infecting more than 75,700 people and killing at least 2,130, as of Thursday. Last week, CNBC reported that Amazon was one of several tech giants that met with the World Health Organization at Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif. offices to discuss how to stop misinformation about the coronavirus on their platforms. Bad actors have attempted to make money off of fears around the coronavirus. On Amazon, sellers have offered books that stoke fears about the virus, while vitamin C products have increasingly surfaced because of false reports it can cure the coronavirus. Now, Amazon appears to be cracking down on mentions of the coronavirus in products listed on its marketplace. In one case, Amazon told a seller it would remove their listing for a surgical face masks b...

Stop buying Apple’s flimsy Lightning cables, try these instead

Apple’s iPhone cables just aren’t good. These alternatives from Amazon and Anker are cheaper and better. A frayed Apple cord ranks high on my list of first-world problems, right up there with stepping on a Lego or living in a city without a Shake Shack. I’ve had some sort of portable Apple product since I got my first iPod in 2005. The flimsy connectors that come with each device have been thorns in my side ever since.  It’s been the same story for more than a decade: For months, I charge my device with no problem. But eventually, a bump pops up where connector meets cord. Soon, there’s a slit in that light gray casing that exposes the guts of the cable. Then, I have to choose whether to wrap electrical tape around the injured cable or buy a new one from another manufacturer.  (Full disclosure: My husband works at an Apple store. It doesn’t stop my cords from busting, though.) Other folks feel the same way. Apple cables have ranked among the lowest-rated products in Apple’s own online store for years. And just take a peek at some of the 3,407 (and counting) comments about frayed Apple cables in Reddit’s Mildly Infuriating channel: ...

Ordinary notebooks are 98-pound weaklings next to the drop-tested, outdoors-loving survivalists known as rugged laptops. Whether you’re getting wet or getting your hands dirty, here’s what you need to know about machines that shrug off abuse and stay productive in the worst environments. The Dell Latitude 7212 is a well-designed, tough detachable Windows tablet that can take pretty much anything you (and nature) can throw at it. And compared with the rugged competition it’s a relative bargain. The tough-as-nails Panasonic Toughbook 33 2-in-1 tablet packs in tons of durability, computing power, and battery life for those working in harsh or dangerous conditions. Panasonic’s Toughbook 55 isn’t full-on armored, but among “true” rugged laptops, it’s the easiest to customize and one of the best-equipped. Dell’s ultra-tough flagship, the Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme, has highs (an extra-bright screen) and lows (an unusable touchpad), but it sails through abuse that would turn lesser laptops to shrapnel. Expensive but awesome. Though it lacks a cutting-edge CPU, Panasonic’s Toughbook 31 does everything a rugged laptop should, ...

Although much of this area is situated at a relatively high latitude, the Pacific Northwest rarely

Although much of this area is situated at a relatively high latitude, the Pacific Northwest rarely endures the bone-chilling temperatures experienced by our neighbors to the east. Not only does that make the winter season more bearable, it also makes extremely efficient home heating and cooling technologies cost-effective. In mild climates, heat pumps are significantly cheaper to own and operate than furnaces or zonal heating systems, such as baseboard, wall or cable ceiling heaters. At the most basic level, heat pumps are heat exchangers. The units don’t generate heat, they move it. In practice that means a heat pump extracts heat from the air outside your home in the winter–and transfers it into our homes to warm them up. In summer, the process is reversed; heat is pulled out of our home and transferred outside, cooling the indoor air. The three most popular heat pump types in our region are air source, ductless (mini-splits) and geothermal. Selecting the right version for you depends on your home’s conditions and your budget. Air source heat pumps are the most commonly used in Southwest Washington. They connect to a home’s air duct system and supplement a furnace. These heat ...
