Unless you’ve spent some time in the industrial electrical field, you might be surprised at the degree of integration involved in the various control panels needed to run factories and the like. Look inside any cabinet almost anywhere in the world, and you’ll be greeted by rows of neat plastic terminal blocks, circuit breakers, signal conditioners, and all manner of computing hardware from programmable logic controllers right on to Raspberry Pis and Arduinos. A well-crafted industrial control panel can truly be a thing of beauty. But behind all the electrical bits in the cabinet, underneath all the neatly routed and clearly labeled wires, there’s a humble strip of metal that stitches it all together: the DIN rail. How did it come to be, and why is it so ubiquitous? The development of what would become DIN-rail and the terminal blocks and accessories that mount to it closely tracks the early phases of industrial electrification. As motors and other components become more and more essential to industry, so too did the need for something sensible to connect everything together. Early control panels were a mish-mash of whatever terminals could be found, often plain nuts and bolts in...

Tragedy in Santa Fe: Remembering Sabika Sheikh, the Pakistani Student Killed in School Shooting

Sabika Sheikh, a Muslim exchange student from Pakistan with dreams of changing the world, struck up an unlikely friendship with an evangelical Christian girl. The two became inseparable—until the day a fellow student opened fire. Only a few kids in the fourth-period girls’ PE class noticed the new student. She had long black hair and mahogany eyes, and when she walked into the gym, she sat by herself in the bleachers, staring curiously at the other girls in their shorts and T-shirts doing jumping jacks and push-ups. She seemed a little lost, unsure what she was supposed to be doing. It was September 11, 2017, and after two weeks of cancellations caused by Hurricane Harvey, classes had resumed at Santa Fe High School, some 35 miles south of Houston.  Just before fourth period came to an end, one of the students approached the girl in the stands. She had straw-blond hair and turquoise eyes, and she wore a blue T-shirt with a Bible verse, Matthew 4:19, printed on the front in white: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  The girl with the black hair smiled back. “I’m Sabika.” She said that she was a foreign exchange student from Pakistan. The girls kept talking. Jaelyn t...

Ventilation is a management tool which allows a grower to control bird comfort and air quality

Ventilation is a management tool which allows a grower to control bird comfort and air quality to optimise performance, bird health and welfare. The ventilation requirements of a bird changes as it grows, and with climatic conditions; ranging from providing a minimum amount of fresh air in cold weather or during brooding to creating high air speed to keep birds comfortable during hot and/or humid conditions. Minimum ventilation is used whenever the house temperature is below the set point temperature. The focus is to supply enough heat to keep the birds comfortable, and enough ventilation to maintain acceptable air quality. The house must be equipped with adequate, well distributed, heating capacity to cope with the coldest ambient temperature, while still ventilating to maintain air quality. During minimum ventilation, air enters the house through sidewall inlets. The aim is to direct the cold incoming air up to the peak of the roof where warm air accumulates (Figure 1). Inlet management is a key part of minimum ventilation. Inlets operate based on negative pressure, and in order to achieve the required pressure, the house must be well-sealed and air tight. The inlets in use sh...

One year with the Chevrolet Bolt EV: Takeaways from my immersion into all-electric driving

Just over a year ago, I finally realized my long-time dream to purchase an affordable all-electric car with over 200 miles of range. Now that I’ve got a full year and around 8,500 miles of road behind me in the Bolt EV, let’s check in on the good, the bad, and the awesome. One year into owning the Bolt EV as our family’s only vehicle, we are loving, it. It is peppy, smart, and comfortable. Plugging in at home has given us back so much time that used to be wasted waiting in line and filling up at gas stations. We have only had “range anxiety” once, when I was intentionally pushing the car to its limits (we’ll get into the details of that a little later). So far there have been zero mechanical issues or problems with the car. We exclusively use one-pedal driving, which took no time at all to get used to, and now just feels like the “natural” way to drive. Added bonus: since we almost never hit the brake pedal (except in reverse), the brake pads will likely last a very long time. Much to my surprise and dismay, a year after our purchase the Chevy Bolt EV is still the only sub-$40,000 electric car with over 200 miles of range that you can buy and drive home today. I had expected the...

This report from The Brookings Institution’s Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology (AIET) Initiative is part of “AI Governance,” a series that identifies key governance and norm issues related to AI and proposes policy remedies to address the complex challenges associated with emerging technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering health care and serving major roles, from automating drudgery and routine tasks in medical practice to managing patients and medical resources. As developers create AI systems to take on these tasks, several risks and challenges emerge, including the risk of injuries to patients from AI system errors, the risk to patient privacy of data acquisition and AI inference, and more. Potential solutions are complex but involve investment in infrastructure for high-quality, representative data; collaborative oversight by both the Food and Drug Administration and other health-care actors; and changes to medical education that will prepare providers for shifting roles in an evolving system. Although the field is quite young, AI has the potential to play at least four major roles in the health-care system:1 Pushing boundaries of human p...

High-rise fires and non-conforming products: how can architects manage the risk?

The tragedy of London’s Grenfell Tower fire has ignited a global wave of concern surrounding the safety of certain cladding products. Wendy Poulton, risk manager at Informed, considers the various investigations into non-conforming building products that have taken place following incidents across Australia. Since none of the findings have been tested in a civil trial, what are the risks involved in specifying non-conforming products? Flammable cladding is thought to have contributed to the spread of the fire at the Grenfell tower in London. The June 2017 fire in London’s Grenfell Tower, with its shocking loss of life, has refocused the world’s attention on the fire-proofing of high-rise buildings. Comparisons have been drawn with Melbourne’s Lacrosse Building, where in November 2014 a blaze spread rapidly up the building facade, but was contained by the sprinkler system so that there was no loss of life. However, these are very early days, and we await expert investigations to provide better guidance on what has caused and contributed to the terrible Grenfell Tower incident. Meanwhile, this is an ideal moment to recap the investigations and advice from public bodies on the Lacr...

Hillenbrand completes $1.9B Milacron acquisition logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

Milacron shareholders had already approved the deal on Nov. 20, and Hillenbrand followed up that news a day later with a news release that it has wrapped up its cash and stock transaction. “This is an important milestone in both companies’ long histories and I’m excited to welcome Milacron employees to Hillenbrand,” Joe Raver, Hillenbrand president and CEO said in the release. Hillenbrand, like Milacron, is traded on the New York Stock Exchange. With the deal completed, Milacron becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Hillenbrand, and Milacron stock will no longer trade on the NYSE. Hillenbrand noted it is reviewing strategic alternatives for the Cimcool business and has hired advisor Houlihan Lokey to assist in the review. Hillenbrand has appointed Mac Jones as president of Milacron Injection Molding & Extrusion and Ling An-Heid as president of Mold-Masters. They will join Hillenbrand’s executive team. The news release does not mention the role of Tom Goeke, Milacron’s CEO since 2012, going forward. Each Milacron stockholder was allowed one vote for each share of common stock held. According to an Oct. 18 proxy statement filed with the U.S. Securi...

P&&G-says-Imflux-has-created-a-new-way-to-mold logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

Hamilton, Ohio — After four years of secrecy, Procter & Gamble Co. is pulling back the veil on its Imflux process — an injection molding technology that uses low, constant pressure to fill the mold, controlled by software and pressure sensors in the mold and the nozzle. “It’s a low, no-hesitating, constant pressure,” said Gene Altonen, chief technology officer of Imflux. Altonen, a 27-year veteran of P&G and an injection molding expert, said: “Imflux is making real-time adjustments for viscosity shifts, whether it’s the material, the temperature or something in the mold. It is going to make these changes in real time, which gives you a more stable process.” Imflux stands standard injection molding on its head — with its tradition of high-speed, high-pressure injection and the crossover point to pack-and-hold. “We do these phases of the process simultaneously. We’re filling and we’re packing and we’re cooling all simultaneously. And because we’re doing that, when we finish filling the mold, it’s basically a done part,” Altonen said. A thicker part may need some additional cooling, but that is dr...
