‘Don’t feed the monster!’ The people who have stopped buying new clothes | Fashion

A growing movement eschews fast fashion in favour of secondhand clothing. Is this the biggest personal change that can be made for the environment? Lauren Cowdery is flicking through the rails of the Cancer Research charity shop in Goole, east Yorkshire. “Too bobbly!” she tuts at a ribbed top. “This skirt is big but it would be easy to take in … ” Cowdery appears to be shopping, but she is merely browsing. She is on a mission not to buy any new clothes, even ones that have recently belonged to someone else. “I think you have to pull back and ask: ‘Do I need this?’” she says. Cowdery is one of a growing number of people who love clothes but try their hardest to resist buying them for reasons of sustainability. According to the charity Wrap, which promotes sustainable waste management, the average lifetime for a garment in the UK is just 2.2 years. An estimated £30bn of unused clothing hangs in UK wardrobes, and yet still we shop for more. “Each week we buy 38m items and 11m items go to landfill,” says Maria Chenoweth, chief executive of Traid, a charity working to stop clothes being thrown away. “We don’t have enough resources to keep feeding this monster.” Chenoweth believes tha...

MT vape shops sue to block Gov. Bullock’s ban on flavored products

Three Montana vape shops and their trade association filed suit Thursday to overturn Gov. Steve Bullock’s emergency ban on flavored e-cigarette products, saying the “arbitrary and capricious” order would put them out of business. The lawsuit, filed in state District Court in Hamilton, also asked the judge to block Bullock’s rule from taking effect while its legality is decided. Most of the vape shops’ products would be considered “flavored e-liquid” under the order and halting their sale would deprive them of their “primary source of revenue,” the suit said. “If the emergency rules are enforced, Freedom Vapes, Liberty Smoke and Ublaze Vapor will most likely be required to completely shut down,” the lawsuit said. “The petitioners want nothing more than to save the lives and health of their friends, neighbors and fellow Montanans from the ravages of (combustible) cigarettes.” The suit said the state’s rationale that flavored products sold in adults-only stores is leading to increase use by teen-agers is flawed, and that the order should be thrown out because a public-health emergency is not caused by the products sold at vaping stores. Last week, Bullock announced the order banni...

How Secure is Your Security Badge? — Krebs on Security

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> Security conferences are a great place to learn about the latest hacking tricks, tools and exploits, but they also remind us of important stuff that was shown to be hackable in previous years yet never really got fixed. Perhaps the best example of this at last week’s annual DefCon security conference in Las Vegas came from hackers who built on research first released in 2010 to show just how trivial it still is to read, modify and clone most HID cards — the rectangular white plastic “smart” cards that organizations worldwide distribute to employees for security badges. Nearly four years ago, researchers at the Chaos Communication Congress (CCC), a security conference in Berlin, released a paper (PDF) demonstrating a serious vulnerability in smart cards made by Austin, Texas-based HID Global, by far the largest manufacturer of these devices. The CCC researchers showed that the card reader device that HID sells to validate the data stored on its then-new line of iClass proximity cards includes the master encryption key needed to...

New premium Giro Imperial and Empire SLX shoes launched

Giro has today launched two premium shoe models. The Imperial comes with two Boa dials, while the new model Empire SLX updates Giro’s lace-up design with a new, lightweight Syncwire upper, as also used in the Imperial. The most pronounced feature of the Imperial and Empire SLX shoes is their very lightweight, breathable upper with large sections of low stretch mesh. These are thermally welded to polyester reinforcement, for extra strength and support where needed. There’s a third layer thermally welded to these, so that apart from a single seam behind the heel cup, the uppers are seamless. Giro calls this new construction method Synchwire. As well as being comfortable in hot weather, another benefit of the lightweight synthetic upper is that the shoes dry quickly if you get caught out in the rain, plus the absence of seams eliminates the potential for fraying of the stitching and damage to the uppers. Both shoes use an Easton EC90 SLX2 carbon sole unit, with stainless steel cleat plate and replaceable heel pad. The construction makes for a lightweight shoe: we weighed the Imperial shoes at 220g per shoe for a size 42.5, while Giro quotes a weight of 185 grams for the Empire SLX...
